Sound Touch
Moments of Joy and Connection
Sound Touch is a Playable Streets initiative using technology and music to create moments of joy and connection for people in aged care and people living with dementia. Playable Streets’ innovative devices and specialised Play Sessions promote creation and collaboration through physical and social connections.
“‘It’s just about inclusion and joy and that’s breathtakingly refreshing.’”

Standard session
One facilitator brings Sound Touch for about an hour. It is relaxed, with people free to come and go. This is our core offering, available metro or regional.
Twelve session series
One session a month for a year, with one facilitator. A flat price for a longer commitment, and it can run across more than one of your sites.

What it is
An initial session, then we leave a Sound Touch device with you for one to two months, and return for a second session and a feedback chat. We run a short staff training, about 20 minutes, so anyone can use it, and we are on call for any tech questions while it is there. Two facilitators, with one focused on documentation.
Why we call it research
While the device is with you, we gather observations, stories and permissions. This is how we build the evidence to take to larger funders, and it feeds straight back into developing the program. We will set out clearly what we would ask of you, which is a simple agreement, a little communication, and permission to use what we capture.
What you get from it
Because the device stays for one to two months, the joy is not a one off. It becomes part of daily life on the floor, and given how memory works with dementia, it can feel brand new each day. Once that door is open, it tends to stay open. You also become part of something bigger. The work supports your wellbeing and positive ageing reporting, your logo goes on our materials, and you will have stories and data to share with your board.

Case Study:
Sound Touch across the Mornington Penninsula
Supported by Mornington Peninsula Shire Arts and Culture
It was such a joy to bring our new SoundTouch instrument into seven aged care centres across Mornington, supported by Mornington Peninsula Arts & Culture. Residents and staff were captivated and deeply moved by this unique experience of sound, connection, and joy. The project has been a beautiful opportunity to share music and touch in ways that open space for play, creativity, and togetherness. ✨🎶

Evaluation
Our first major project was the development of a new device called SoundTouch that allows participants to create music through interpersonal touch.
This project was developed in collaboration with Maroondah City Council. A report was created by Effective changed that outlines the impact of this unique project.
