KITE CHOIR: A GLOBAL SKY SYMPHONY
INFORMATION FOR PRESENTERSKite Choir: A Global Sky Symphony is a large scale participatory installation where hundreds of kites carry children’s voices from around the world into public space. Presented in parks, beaches, and festival grounds, it invites communities to slow down, look up, and gather beneath the sky in a shared act of listening.
AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE
Children and young people contribute recordings in their own language: singing, humming, speaking, and sound making inspired by the natural world. They also whisper a wish for the world, heard as breath, texture, and rhythm rather than translated text. A composer weaves these contributions into a living choral composition that drifts across the site, creating an immersive sonic landscape with no fixed beginning, end, or front of house.
Audiences wander through a wind garden of custom kites on tall poles and flying overhead. People lie on the grass, fly kites, and interact with bespoke speaker spools that allow gentle movement to affect sound. Kite Choir is flexible and scalable, with options for a full outdoor installation or a weather resilient gallery style version with suspended kites and surround sound. Each presentation can include local workshops for kite making and voice recording, plus optional ticketed experiences and sunset ceremonies featuring local choirs or musicians.

THE SPOOL INSTRUMENT
Each kite is paired with a spool instrument developed specifically for Kite Choir. As participants unwind, reel in, tilt, or gently rotate the spool, their movement subtly shapes the sound in the space, creating a tactile link between body, wind, and voice. Simple and intuitive for first time users, the spool invites playful listening and quiet collaboration, allowing people of all ages to feel like they are “playing” the choir while the kites rise and shift overhead.
